You head out to the mall, thinking you'll apply in-person. But once you step inside, you start thinking to yourself, "What am I doing here?". I don't even know where to start.
If it does, don't worry - feeling overwhelmed during your summer job search is pretty much a rite of passage for every young person. I remember searching for my first summer job and feeling so overwhelmed and unsure of where to start that I left the mall after 5 minutes - and at the time, I practically lived in the mall!
But one really effective way to get over this is to attend some of the free job fairs that are organized throughout Toronto. And should you live in the North York or Scarborough areas, you're in luck because there are two upcoming job fairs with many employers expected to attend.
Scarborough Job Fair
This job fair is being organized by the Toronto Parks, Forestry, & Recreation division and will take place at the Scarborough Civic Centre on Friday, March 11, 2011 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
There are many employers scheduled to attend, including:
- Compass Group (provides food services at the Toronto Zoo)
- Ontario Place
- Boys & Girls Club
- YMCA (summer camp jobs for youth)
- Centreville Amusement Park
If you've never been to the Scarborough Civic Centre, download a free map here. Located at 150 Borough Drive, it's pretty much right across from the TTC and GO Bus stations at Scarborough Town Centre.
INSIDER'S TIP: If you don't have a Social Insurance Number, give yourself some extra time before the job fair begins and visit the
Scarborough Service Canada Centre. Since you're a quick 2 minute walk from the office, bring along the required primary piece of identification and apply in person. It only takes a few minutes and you'll need it once you start working.
For more information on the upcoming job fair, call 416 396 5523 or 416 791 0954.
North York Job Fair
Organized by Toronto Employment & Social Services, this job fair will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2011 from 10:00am to 3:00pm at the North York Central Library.
A range of employers are scheduled to attend, including:
- Canadian Tire
- Fasttrax Transport
- Home Depot
- Paragon Security
- The Gap
- Second Cup
I definitely recommend attending both events if you can as both provide an excellent opportunity to meet with a number of employers at the same time. And, given that many organizations that offer career-type jobs - like the RCMP, Toronto Police, and Toronto Fire Services - will be attend, you can also use these job fairs as an opportunity to learn more about potential career paths.
If you do decide to go to one of the summer job fairs, make sure you've got an outstanding resume and cover letter that highlights your experience and skills. If you don't have a resume or cover letter, download the resume and cover letter templates I've developed.
Have fun - and good luck!
